The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the international standard for describing language ability. From A1 (Beginner) to C2 (Mastery), universities and employers worldwide rely on official exams mapped to these levels. French: DELF & DALF
Awarded by the French Ministry of Education, the DELF (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française) and DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) are valid for life. B2 is typically the minimum requirement for undergraduate study in France, while C1 is required for master's programs.
Basic User
Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. Can communicate in simple and routine tasks.
Independent User
Can understand the main points of clear standard input. B2 represents fluency capable of regular interaction with native speakers without strain.
Proficient User
Can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects.
Spanish: DELE
The DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) are official titles certifying degree of competence and mastery of the Spanish language, granted by Spain's Ministry of Education. They are globally recognized by universities and corporate employers.
Basic User
Provides basic linguistic tools for basic communication. Focuses on immediate needs and highly familiar everyday situations.
Independent User
The B2 diploma certifies the ability to interact with native speakers with a sufficient degree of fluency and naturalness. Crucial for working in Spanish-speaking environments.
Proficient User
Certifies linguistic competence to communicate effectively in any situation, proving a mastery of vocabulary and nuanced cultural idioms.
German: Goethe-Zertifikat
The Goethe-Institut examinations are well known throughout the world and the associated certificates are accepted as qualification by employers and further education institutions in many countries. B2 or C1 is typically required to study at a German university.
Basic User
Certifies that candidates can make themselves understood in simple, routine situations dealing with a simple and direct exchange of information.
Independent User
B2 proves advanced language skills. It is highly sought after by employers and is often the standard required for working in healthcare or corporate sectors in Germany.
Proficient User
C2, also known as the GDS (Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom), certifies an advanced level of competence and allows foreign students access to German universities.
Mandarin: HSK
The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is China's only standardized test of Standard Chinese language proficiency for non-native speakers. While recently introducing a 9-level system, the classic 6-level system is still widely utilized and roughly mapped to the CEFR.
Beginner Levels
Tests basic vocabulary (up to 600 characters) and simple sentence structures. Capable of basic daily communication in China.
Intermediate Levels
HSK 5 requires knowing 2,500 characters. Passing HSK 4 or 5 is generally the requirement to study a degree program in a Chinese university.
Advanced Levels
Mastery of over 5,000 characters. Can easily comprehend written and spoken information in Chinese and effectively express ideas orally or on paper.
English: IELTS, Cambridge & TOEIC
English boasts several major certification frameworks depending on your goals. IELTS is globally recognized for university admissions and immigration. Cambridge English exams are valid for life and preferred by many European institutions. TOEIC is explicitly designed for the corporate workplace.

Cambridge: PET (B1) & FCE (B2)
TOEIC: 550 - 780
Standard requirement for foundational courses or general employment.
Advanced
Cambridge: CAE (C1 Advanced)
TOEIC: 785 - 900
